Our Path to Independence

Presented by Savanta

By finding that delicate balance of using the gifts from mother earth and respecting the sacred relationship with the environment, the Henvey Inlet First Nation leadership has successfully created their path to independence.

In February 2016, Savanta was appointed by HIFN Chief and Council to serve as their Environmental Commissioner, tasked with overseeing the implementation of the Environmental Stewardship Regime including the Environmental Permit issued for the Henvey Inlet Wind Energy Centre (HIWEC) Project.

The Environmental Commissioner is a key component of a new and innovative model for Indigenous environmental stewardship and management. This model allows the First Nation to make independent and informed decisions on activities occurring within their First Nation Lands; a role traditionally played by the federal government.
