Identification and Validation of Extreme Weather Indicators for Agricultural Production and Rural Resilience
CONTEXT
For several years, initiatives have been ongoing in a variety of contexts, including Canada and in Ontario, to characterize the vulnerability, risk, and resilience of agro-ecological and rural systems to climate change and extreme weather using indicators.
SOLUTION
With funding from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and support from our project partners, this study was undertaken to identify and validate extreme weather indicators pertaining to agricultural production and rural resilience for two case study areas in Ontario.
OUTCOMES/OUTPUTS
Through this project, we have compared the performance of different downscaled datasets in their skill and uncertainty in estimating extreme weather variables. These data will eventually be used in a landscape-based decision support model, called Envirion, for testing adaptation scenarios.
