Climate and Extreme Weather Resilience in Peel

CONTEXT

In 2011, the Region of Peel released the Peel Climate Change Strategy (PCCS) which was developed in partnership with the cities of Brampton and Mississauga, Town of Caledon, Credit Valley Conservation Authority, and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA). This strategy identified the need to conduct risk assessments and detailed adaptation plans for a number of key sectors, including infrastructure, agriculture, communities and natural ecosystems.

SOLUTION

The OCC, in partnership with TRCA, Risk Sciences International (RSI), the GLISA and many other stakeholders in the Region of Peel has undertaken work to provide the climate risk and vulnerability information needed for adaptation. By understanding the anticipated implications of climate change on these systems, stakeholders can identify and prioritize adaptation alternatives.

OUTCOMES/OUTPUTS

Agricultural Assessment: The first study examines the agricultural sector in the Region of Peel and is intended to be used by municipal and regional practitioners for planning purposes. It contains information relevant to the major climate change impacts that influence agricultural production systems in the Region of Peel.

Community Assessment (Port Credit): The second case study focuses on identifying vulnerabilities created by climate drivers with a focus on municipal infrastructure and services in Port Credit including: the shoreline, private properties, the electrical grid, human health, and roadways.

Natural Systems Assessment : The third study is focused on identifying vulnerabilities in the natural ecosystem and how these may be affected by changes in climate.
